This is the site of the of mass hysteria that gripped the small, puritan village from February 1692 to May 1693-- an event that claimed the lives of 20 people, most of them women. What makes this Massachusetts town so unique, however, is how they not only accept their chaotic history... but embrace it whole-heartedly! Attracting nearly 250,000 guests every year, Salem boasts some of the most comprehensive, Halloween-themed attractions that are sure to please everyone in your ghoulish party.
So, pack your cauldron and dust off your broom, my dears. Below, you will find my top three picks to kick off your bewitching visit.
The Salem Witch Museum
This domineering structure cuts a rather intimidating figure. Therefore, it is the perfect starting point for the history buff in all of us. Not a big fanatic of the tales of yesteryear? Do not fear, my dears, this is not your typical "'ye olde museum". This grand dame has charm to spare... and a few tricks up her sleeve as well. Apparently, many of Salem's guests agree, as this attraction boasts the highest attendance of any of the other museums on this list!
Salem in 1630: The Pioneer Village
This attraction is America's first, living history museum. Built in 1930, it sits on nearly three acres and boasts various examples of colonial architecture. But, let's face facts; even Lady Grimhilde knows it'll take more than a Sleeping Tonic to drag your screeching three-year-old through the sprawling grounds. This particular museum boasts a very interesting tidbit from it's, somewhat recent, past. It was also one of the "stars" of the cult-classic Hocus Pocus. I recommend watching the Disney classic with your little goblins, and then holding a scavenger hunt through the village. It's sure to add a touch of magic to this educational landmark.
House of the Seven Gables
"Discover a house made famous by fiction"-- a perfect introduction to Nathaniel Hawthorne's birthplace. It also stands as his real-life muse to the book that shares it's name... a double-whammy that earns this attraction Lady Grimhilde's seal of approval. It also holds the most diverse range of daily attractions: from day time tours to late night ghostly encounters; this homestead truly has it all... and some to spare.
