Haunted Sleepy Hollow, NY

This seemingly small, unassuming Dutch village has an aura about it all it's own. Perhaps it's the fact that it served as Washington Irving's muse in his famous The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. As well as Tim Burton's 1999 adaptation of the same name. The Hudson Valley region of New York is also, somewhat, infamous for it's fair share of ghost stories over the years. It is this spectral history that the community clings to the most, with Headless Horseman sightings creeping around every corner.

Below, you will find my top three picks to kick off your haunted trip. Watch your heads!

The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze
With over 7,000 hand carved and illuminated pumpkin displays, this attraction is sure to blow the minds of even the most iPhone-frenzied child. The fact that the setting also happens to be an historic, 18th century property doesn't hurt either! From gourd filled Jack-in-the-Boxes, to the awe-inspring Pumpkin Planetarium, this family-friendly romp is truly a sight for sore eyes. However, this attraction fills up quickly, so I suggest booking your visit as soon as possible.

The Horseman's Hollow
The Phillipsburg Manor is transformed, in this horrifying retelling of the Tale of Sleepy Hollow. Although, this might not be the most family-friendly attraction on this list, it is the most eventful... to say the least! For 15 evenings, guests take a walk they'll never forget; facing off against creatures of all sorts--the human and undead alike-- in an effort to "survive" a landscape driven insane by the Horesman's reign. For the sturdy of heart, body and soul; this may be just the ticket! Most nights do sell out in advance, my dears, so book immediately if you want to be scared out of your wits.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
Now, I know that asking you to walk a cemetery over Halloween seems like a bit of a long shot. But, hear me out. Not only does this landmark serve as the final resting place of Washington Irving himself, but it is probably one of the more peaceful "attractions" on this list... and a place that visitors are just dying to get into it. As a visitor here once myself, I can tell you that there is nothing more hauntingly satisfying than visiting the graves of such famous folk as Benedict Arnold and the many members of the Rockefeller clan. There is also another perk to this particular stop that garnered my seal of approval: all self-guided tours by car or on foot are free! I suggest making a stop around late afternoon, a few hours before dusk, for an extra spooky element.
